Check out these guys! These are the people we try to keep track of. They either have specialized skills or they are blog authors you will want to know.
These files are available for download, in some cases only with password access. Note that a few "guide" documents are only available in the Shopping Cart.
These web links are worth checking out. When a blog author puts a link in his post, we review it as a potential addition. These are the sites we go to a lot.
In twenty-five years as a registered architect I have rubbed shoulders with many talented people. In my most-recent role as a management consultant, I enjoyed doing research into the secret-sauce of high performing enterprises. Only now do I understand the power wielded by those shaping the built environment. The places we create, big and small, mold our most valuable asset: people.
Businesses that value great design enjoy comfortable profits, good market share, and happy employees. We know that the corporate Holy Grail: “continuous improvement” requires a vision of the endgame. This is why Lana Rigsby recommends that we “begin with the end in mind.” It is designers who uniquely drive such change initiatives, conceiving and rendering a vision of the solution, so other pros can bring their expertise to bear. Lest we forget about the dollars or risks that are shuffled, we makers need to be managed wisely, even if only by ourselves. This website is a vessel for learning and sharing hard-won knowledge in the quest for design excellence.
DesignDeliverables is named for a familiar section in design proposals. After honeymoon words are finished, parties want to know “where is the list of design deliverables?” In a book I wrote a decade ago, I suggested that building owners ask candidate designers for example “design deliverables”, for it is these documents that separate pros from wanna-bees.
This blog will work hard to resonate with builders as well as designers. I learned the hard way, that contractors and fabricators are an equal partner in the “making” dance, regardless of their profession. Where possible we will avoid touting marketing versions of projects, and search for healthy amounts of “unfortunate decisions.” For it is true, that you learn more from mistakes than successes. Here you will find stories of people building things, and hopefully you will bring a few nuggets home to make your jobs better. Landscaping, cost-control, green technologies, furniture, lighting, cabinets, art, signage, interiors, MEPF/C/S systems, and of course buildings are all in our editorial palate. Because it is important to keep “some skin in the game”, DesignDeliverables is also busy developing and designing a few selected projects as well.
